Javier is not the typical Scandinavian. He’s actually Spanish, moved to Finland in 2015 and now lives in Tallinn. But spend two minutes with Javier and you’ll feel the Scandinavian passion.

Javier says that In this industry “if you don’t feel the destination, you can’t do a good job”

After working for different DMCs Javier started his own travel business, because he saw many things about Scandinavian travel that needed to be done differently. Javier’s mission was to help change travel in the region, so it is more sustainable, there’s better communication, and culture becomes essential to the traveler experience.

“We want to create itineraries with a meaning, with culture and sustainability integral to the activities. Why are reindeers important? Why do we need to preserve whales? So it’s not just about putting a traveler in a sledge but learning why the sledge is there. It’s not just eating a traditional meal, but having a Sami chef explaining why and how the people cook this way.”

Javier’s company Nexus Polaris is far from the mainstream and the standard quality found in Scandinavia. They avoid hotel chains and have a folder of private villas, lodges, chalets and glamping options, some of which cannot be booked anywhere else. Every guide is personally known to them, rather than just a name. And when travelers want something different, Javier finds a way to make it happen.

“For example, we had a traveler who was really interested in whales. So we arranged a seven-day boat charter with a specialised guide, to track whales far from the tourist boats. And when the weather was good, the traveler was able to jump in the water and swim or dive with humpbacks.”

With Javier you get the best of both sides. A deep understanding of travel from a traveler’s perspective. And an incredible passion for arranging Scandinavia’s most unique experiences.
