Baboons guard the entrance to Great Zimbabwe, the most important ancient African heritage site south of Zanzibar.

Great Zimbabwe was the capital of a magnificent kingdom. For centuries it was unopposed. Although it’s now abandoned, you can get a sense for Africa 1000 years ago, as you wander upon the ancient stone. 

While Great Zimbabwe is not as impressive as monuments like those in Rome or Athens, it’s an incredibly important site in Africa’s history. 

A local guide will show you around, including the story of the kingdom. And after descending from Great Zimbabwe you will go searching for rhinos in the surrounding bush.
