Zanzibar has a brutal history as a slave trading island. Even when it was outlawed elsewhere, there were still caves from which African slaves were shipped across the world.
Yet there is hope to this story. With a local guide you will visit caves and hear the stories of the stolen. At a marketplace you will see where slaves were auctioned. Inside the house of famous slave trader Tippu Tip you can appreciate the wealth of this trade.
And while much of the day’s tale is barbaric and hard to handle, hope comes from what Zanzibar has become. You will experience how the island has shifted and learnt from its past.
