San Gerardo de Dota is a sleepy town deep in a remote valley in central Costa Rica. Towering Talamanca mountains, clad in cloud forest, surround the town. And in those trees perch some of the most spectacular birds in the world.
This birdwatching hotspot is slowly gaining fame and attention. But for now, the forests are quiet and opportunities are ripe for spotting flame-throated warbler, collared trogon, volcano hummingbird, tufted flycatcher, and many more coveted species.
Venture into the cloud forest with a guide who knows just what to look for. If you’re lucky, you might even glimpse a resplendent quetzal, which can be found here year-round.
