Raise your arms and spin to the sound of the sompogogungan, a gong beat that’s both native and dear to the people of Sabah. The accompanying dance – the Sumazau – is a special festive ritual for many an occasion. Endearing and upbeat, the melody manages to combine tradition with play.
Get one to one practise at a remote Sabahan village, where you will learn the steps amidst the community. An eager crowd watches your moves, and eventually moves with you. They appreciate your efforts, and laugh with you through trial and error.
This is a test of timing and harmony. It’s an expression of endurance, as you tap and turn your way round a tune that won’t be easy to forget.
