Northern Oman is wild and mountainous, a string of ragged peaks that roll across the landscape. It feels remote and inaccessible out here, halfway between the desert and the stars.
The area around Jebel Shams is a hiking paradise and the hiking season runs from September to May. There are excellent lodges in the area, ideal if you want a single night in the mountains or an adventurous overnight hike up Jebel Shams itself.
Of course you can also drive, taking a four-wheel drive into this area of vast natural splendour.
