The Whanganui River twists over 100 kilometres through the North Island, connecting a volcano with the coast. There are no villages or settlements on route. Not even any roads. In some places you will be two days of paddling away from the nearest takeout point.
The classic Whanganui canoeing expedition takes five days. It is not luxurious in the typical sense. A team of guides will set up your camp and you’ll have a comfortable tent on the river, with shared washroom facilities.
