Standing on the pan the whiteness is almost absolute. Salt shimmers for eternity, in every direction. This is the world’s largest salt pan and you set off on a quad bike, following a trail through the emptiness.
Out of the mirage comes life. A baobab tree appears. An elephant swings his trunk in your direction. Zebra and gemsbok cluster together. But mostly it’s just silence, the unthinkable, improbable silence you can’t imagine anywhere outside Africa.
You can spend half a day quad biking upon the pans. A travel designer can also arrange an overnight quad bike safari. You will roll out a sleeping mat beneath the stars and camp in this place without roads. There’s nothing permanent for hundreds of miles and the impressions are fabulous.
