Witnessing one of India’s chaotic and bizarre religious ceremonies is integral to the country’s experience. In the famous Sri Meenakshi Temple of Madurai, a going to bed ceremony is played out amongst a frenzied crowd. 

From a gallery outside the main temple, you can witness this ceremony taking place from afar, as you soak in all that is happening around you. The image of Shiva is carried each night in an elaborate chariot, from his shrine to his wife Parvati’s resting place in a different part of the temple.
