A desert doesn’t quite feel like a desert until you encounter soaring sand dunes. The Khongoryn Els are some of the world’s largest and they stretch across the Gobi, a spine of yellow sand rising and falling and rising and falling.
Climb along the ridges and sit on the dunes for unforgettable Gobi views, the sand framed against a surreal black mountain backdrop. Later in the day you meet a nomadic camel herding family and join them for some unusual camel products.
Taste camel meat and pluck up the courage to sample fermented camel milk, a local delicacy that gets most visitors pulling faces. Then spend a night beside the dunes at a private ger camp.
