A Wilderness Untouched

Welcome to the polar North. Where crystal clear waterfalls tumble down from snow-dappled mountains, where Alpine bliss extends in all directions. Where it’s cold, very cold, but also silent and serene. And you have this feeling of solitude that only exists when you go to the extremities of our planet. Greenland is far away. Greenland is a land of ice, not a green land.

And whichever way you turn, you find your eyes feast on these incredible scenes, verdant valleys, dramatic peaks, icebergs, beautiful lush blue fjords. A wilderness untouched, where the only restriction is your own sense of expedition. How far do you want to travel into the Greenland wilderness? Do you want to cruise past and watch it from a ship? Watch icebergs carving before your eyes, that great, resounding crack of nature creating something new. Or do you want to kayak through fjords where your kayak is so small, and the fjord is so big that the majesty of nature makes you feel humbled.

Perhaps you want to go on a mountain bike, a mountain bike in Greenland. Yes, that was possible as well. Maybe on a Zodiac boat with a local guide, searching for wildlife, exotic birds, strange creatures that live in this polar wonderland.

It’s Just You And Your Group

In Southern Greenland, you can go for days without seeing other people. It’s just you and your group, and your guides. Wild and endless. Here you’ll find the world’s largest fjord system. You can hike for a day, hike for an hour, hike for more than one day.

Or perhaps you want to get in a plane. Perhaps you want to fly over the world’s largest ice sheet. One of the world’s great mysteries, an ice sheet, the Greenland ice sheet. One that is disappearing, but it still covers 1.5 million square kilometers. Some places in that ice sheet are three kilometers thick. How amazing is that? So perhaps you fly over this expanse on a scenic helicopter flight, where crevasses and cracks scar the landscape, where the colors flip from sparkling white to turquoise, and then a dark abyss.

From the air you can track ridges and peaks, even polar bears. And then you can touch down, hear the crunch of ice beneath your feet. From a remote landing spot there is nothing but ice, nothing but ice in all directions — not a green land, very much an ice land. And it’s a scene to remember so many years from now. If you are really adventurous, why not camp? Camp on a fjord. Hike on the tundra. Go forage for fresh ingredients to cook with on the tundra, wake up and open your tent to this glorious scene, an untapped, untouched, natural paradise.

Explore The Wilderness In Comfort

Maybe bathe in hot springs. That’s another thing you can do in Greenland, bathe in hot springs on an uninhabited island, dominated by titanic peaks. Bathe in warm Arctic waters as ice and snow is all around you.

Perhaps the most famous place to go, Lindenau Fjord. A place of dramatic ice sculptures, where alpine melt creates waterfalls on rock faces. And tidewater glaciers create otherworldly shapes and colors.

Famous, but still unexplored, because this is Greenland. This is Greenland, where very few people venture and even fewer people live. And for the rite of passage, you can make a polar plunge in these very cold Arctic waters, but mostly you can be warm and comfortable, exploring a wilderness in a way that suits you.

Flexible Itineraries

And that’s why at Kated, we really like Quark Expeditions. There are various boat companies running cruises around Greenland, but Quark, we really like Quark because they offer the greatest variety of activities and the most flexibility on an itinerary. So with most cruise itineraries, you cruise, and it’s a very set schedule with a set activity at each place. Quark has onboard helicopters, so you can fly off by helicopter from the boat, to go mountain biking, kayaking, perhaps camping.

You can do all the different activities from the boat, depending on how adventurous you want to be. And each stop the guides give you all these different options. So as you explore Greenland, you don’t need to have a fixed itinerary. You can really make your own itinerary depending on how you feel and dependending on the conditions.

That’s the other great thing about Quark. They keep their schedule and their cruise itinerary very flexible, because of course, sometimes in Greenland, the weather is not great. So they allow more time to make sure you can still experience a great place, by staying an extra 12 or 24 hours in that destination.

You can see more about Greenland on Kated.com. Take a look there, you’ll find a number of travel experiences, from Quark and their expert travel designers there. It’s really a destination that I think is going to be really big in the summer next year, because you can be out in the wild, away from everything. Quark also got a brand new boat, the Ultramarine, which will make its maiden voyage.

And if you want to travel independently, you can do that in Greenland as well. You don’t need to go on a cruise, check out Kated.com for some inspiration. Find the ideas, the travel experiences you want to do, and then find the travel designer and connect with a travel designer who can help arrange them for you.
